The "Butcher of Rostov" is one of the names given to Andrei Chikatilo, a notorious serial killer who operated in the Rostov Oblast region of the Soviet Union (now in Russia) between 1978 and 1990.
Chikatilo earned his nickname due to the gruesome and horrifying nature of his crimes, which involved the brutal murders and mutilation of numerous victims, primarily young boys and girls. He would then engage in acts of necrophilia and mutilate the bodies of his victims.
His other nicknames including "The Rostov Ripper" or "The Red Ripper" reflect the savagery of Chikatilo's crimes, making him one of the most infamous serial killers in history.
